Fine Jewelry or Fashion Jewelry: The Difference

Fine jewelry is typically made with precious metals, such as gold, platinum or sterling silver, natural gemstones or diamonds, and natural, cultured pearls. But there are a few exceptions. A precious metal setting that features a natural gemstone surrounded by manufactured stones is still considered to be fine jewelry. If the main stone is manufactured, however, the piece will be classified as costume (or fashion) jewelry.

The phrase “fashion jewelry” is generally interchangeable with the phrase “costume jewelry,” which was popularized in the 1930s when Hollywood adorned its starlets in fabulous fakes that were less costly if broken, lost or stolen. The jewelry was also more affordable for women who wanted to emulate their favorite actresses. Use of the term “fashion” jewelry became more common later in the 20th century.
